YouTube thumbnail – 16:9

Thumbnails need a 16:9 ratio. Google states a minimum width of 640 pixels and recommends up to 3840 × 2160 pixels for videos; 1280 × 720 is the usual compromise between sharpness and file size.

Format: YouTube Thumbnail (16:9, 1280 × 720) · 1280 × 720 pixels · aspect ratio 16:9

YouTube thumbnail size: 1280 × 720 px (16:9)

A YouTube thumbnail is 1280 × 720 pixels at 16:9. YouTube accepts larger files up to 3840 × 2160, and there is a real argument for the larger size: on a 4K television the thumbnail is shown at full width, and an uploaded 1280-pixel image is upscaled and looks soft. Whichever size you choose, the ratio has to be exactly 16:9 – YouTube letterboxes anything else with black bars.

A thumbnail is usually seen about the size of a postage stamp next to a dozen others, so the rules differ from a website image: two or three words at most, one clear subject, strong contrast, no thin fonts. Keep the lower right corner free, because the duration badge is drawn there, and leave the bottom strip clear as well for the progress bar. A face with an unmistakable expression outperforms a wide scene, and a readable word beats a logo nobody recognises.

The thumbnail is the single strongest factor in whether a video is clicked, so it is worth exporting at the size you will actually be shown in. Because YouTube also generates covers for Shorts and for the mobile feed, the Shorts cover tool handles the 9:16 variant, and the size reference lists the values for every other platform in one table.

Good to know

Fact check: 1280 × 720 is not Google’s recommendation but the widely used lower bound – the previous label could suggest otherwise. File size matters too: 2 MB on mobile, 50 MB on desktop.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Four questions about the 1280 × 720 thumbnail – what size to upload, what YouTube covers, and how much text survives.

Is 1280 × 720 enough, or should I upload 3840 × 2160?
1280 × 720 is the size YouTube documents and the one used for most placements. On a large television the thumbnail is shown at full width, where an upscaled 1280-pixel image looks soft – so uploading 3840 × 2160 is worth it if your source is sharp enough. The ratio has to stay exactly 16:9 either way, otherwise YouTube adds black bars.
Where does YouTube draw the duration badge on the thumbnail?
The runtime is printed in the lower right corner, and a progress bar can appear along the bottom edge while the video plays. Both sit on top of your image. Keep that corner clear of text and logos, and treat the bottom strip as decoration – the guides in this tool mark the area so you see it before exporting.
How many words fit on a thumbnail shown that small?
Two or three at most. A thumbnail appears roughly the size of a stamp next to a dozen others, so a sentence that reads fine in the editor is unreadable in the feed. One clear subject and one short line beat a detailed composition – and a face with an obvious expression is usually read faster than any text.
Do I need a second image for Shorts?
Yes. Shorts use the vertical 9:16 format instead of 16:9, and YouTube covers the lower part of the frame and the right edge with its own interface. A horizontal thumbnail placed into that frame is cropped hard. A separate Shorts cover tool starts from 1080 × 1920 and marks those overlay areas.
