Facebook group cover – 1640 × 856 px

Facebook recommends 1640 × 856 pixels for groups, a ratio of 1.91:1. That is the very size many guides wrongly quote for pages.

Format: Facebook Group Cover (1640 × 856) · 1640 × 856 pixels · aspect ratio

Facebook group cover size: 1640 × 856 px (1.91:1)

A Facebook group cover is 1640 × 856 pixels, a ratio of roughly 1.9:1. The reason covers so often look wrong is that the group name and the buttons are drawn on top of the image: on desktop they occupy the lower left, on mobile they sit across the middle. Facebook shifts the whole cover vertically depending on the screen, so a composition that works on your monitor can be covered on a phone.

Keep the essential part of the image in the upper half and slightly right of centre. Elements in the lower quarter should be decoration. Safe-zone guides mark the covered region directly on the canvas, so you can see the collision before you export instead of after. That matters more here than on a personal profile, because a group cover is often the only branding an administrator has.

Export as PNG if the cover contains a logo, JPEG if it is a photograph. For the images shared inside the group, the Facebook feed post tool handles the 1080 × 1350 crop, and the page cover tool covers the 851 × 315 variant for a business page.

Good to know

The guides mark the area that the group description covers on smaller screens.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Three questions about the 1640 × 856 group cover – and where Facebook puts the group name over it.

Why does Facebook shift the cover up or down depending on the screen?
The cover keeps its width while the visible height changes with the viewport, so Facebook re-centres it vertically instead of stretching it. A composition that looks balanced on a wide monitor can therefore show a different part of the image on a phone. Placing the essential content in the upper half absorbs that shift.
Where do Facebook place the group name and the buttons over the image?
They are drawn on top of the cover: the group name and the action buttons sit along the lower edge on desktop, and closer to the middle on mobile. The safe-zone guides mark that region directly on the canvas, so you see the collision before exporting instead of after posting.
Logo or photo as a group cover?
A photo usually works better, because the name of the group is already written over the image – a second logo competes with it. If the cover has to carry branding, keep the mark in the upper right and export as PNG: sharp edges survive better there, while a photograph is fine as JPEG because Facebook recompresses it anyway.
